Contact hardness matters: a steel or hard roller (about 85 Shore A) calibrates accurately; medium rollers (45–55 Shore A) suit general sanding; soft rollers (20–30 Shore A) follow the surface for veneer and lacquer.

Safety features to look for: over-thickness switch, infeed safety bar, emergency stops, head brake, lockable isolator and auto-stop on belt break, belt run-off or loss of air.

4. Site readiness checklist
  • Power: 400–415 V, 3-phase + neutral + earth, 50 Hz; 10 mm² 4-core cable; 4-pole 40 A breaker.
  • Stabiliser: 25–30 kVA where voltage fluctuates.
  • Earthing: dedicated earth, minimum 8 mm copper or 10 mm aluminium.
  • Compressed air: 6.5 bar at the machine, dry air, 12 mm line; about 26 cfm per belt cleaner.
  • Dust extraction: 2 × 195 mm outlets, about 5,500 m³/h; duct velocity 20–25 m/s.
  • Installation: about two days with trial panels ready.

5. Sanding-to-finishing workflow
  1. Inspect moisture, thickness, flatness and defects.
  2. Calibrate only as much as the dimension requires.
  3. Sand progressively; never skip more than one grit grade.
  4. Clean and inspect.
  5. Apply sealer or primer, then denib lightly without cutting through edges.
  6. Apply and cure the topcoat; polish only fully cured coatings.
  7. Inspect against acceptance criteria and save the approved recipe.
6. Abrasive grit selection
  • Raw sanding: P80–P150, finishing at P150–P180 before stain.
  • Primer and sealer sanding: P220–P320.
  • Lacquer between coats: P320–P600.
  • High-gloss preparation: P1000–P2500, then buffing.

Grit number alone does not set final roughness or removal. Trial on representative samples before approving settings.

8. Dust safety, cost and ROI

Wood dust is a recognised carcinogen. Use engineered extraction, conductive and earthed ducts, guarding and dry air, and never mix metal and wood dust in one system.

Cost per accepted panel = relevant production costs ÷ accepted panels. Include abrasives, labour, power, air, extraction, coating, rework, maintenance and downtime, and compare before and after any change. See surface finishing processes.
