Tenon Mortiser

Tenon mortising machines are a great way to make mortise and tenon joints easily and accurately. Mortise and tenon joints are a powerful type of joint that is often used in furniture making. They are made by cutting a mortise (a hole) into one piece of wood and a tenon (a tongue) into another piece of wood. The tenon is then inserted into the mortise and glued or dowelled in place.

Tenon mortising machines can be either standalone machines or attachments for drill presses. Standalone machines are more powerful and versatile, but they can be more expensive. Attachments for drill presses are less expensive, but they may not be as powerful or versatile.

Here are the common types of tenon mortiser machines:

Benchtop Tenon Mortiser:
Benchtop tenon mortisers are compact and portable machines designed for smaller woodworking workshops or on-site use. They are typically lightweight and can be placed on a workbench or table. Benchtop mortisers are suitable for cutting small to medium-sized mortises and creating tenons on smaller workpieces.

Floor-Standing Tenon Mortiser:
Floor-standing tenon mortisers are larger and more robust machines designed for professional woodworking shops or larger-scale operations. They feature heavy-duty construction and a larger working table. Floor-standing mortisers offer increased stability, power, and precision, making them suitable for cutting larger and deeper mortises and creating tenons on larger workpieces.

Chain Mortiser:
Chain mortisers, also known as slot mortisers, are specialized machines that use a rotating chain with cutting teeth to carve out mortises. They are capable of cutting long and deep mortises quickly and efficiently. Chain mortisers are commonly used in timber framing, construction, and large-scale joinery projects where precise and deep mortises are required.

Hollow Chisel Mortiser:
Hollow chisel mortisers use a hollow square chisel and a drill bit to cut out square or rectangular mortises. The chisel acts as a hollow cutter, and the drill bit removes the waste material from the center of the mortise. Hollow chisel mortisers are versatile machines suitable for both small and large mortise sizes. They are commonly used in cabinet making, furniture production, and general woodworking applications.

Combination Mortiser:
Combination mortisers are machines that combine the capabilities of a tenon mortiser with other woodworking functions. They may have additional features such as a saw or a spindle moulder integrated into the machine. Combination mortisers offer versatility and space-saving benefits, allowing for various joinery operations in a single device.

Here are some of the benefits of using a tenon mortising machine:

Accuracy: Mortise and tenon joints made with a machine are very accurate. This is important for furniture making, where precision is essential.

Speed: Mortise and tenon joints can be made much faster with a machine than by hand. This can save you a lot of time, especially if you are making a lot of pieces of furniture.

Ease of use: Mortise and tenon machines are very easy to use. Even beginners can make accurate and professional-looking joints with a bit of practice.

These are some of the common types of tenon mortiser machines used in woodworking. The choice of tenon mortiser depends on factors such as the scale of operations, the size and depth of mortises required, the type of workpieces, and the specific joinery requirements. Consider the specific woodworking tasks, production volume, available space, and budget when selecting a tenon mortiser. Always follow safety guidelines and the manufacturer's instructions for operating tenon mortisers to ensure safe and efficient woodworking practices.
